A New Orleans teacher is facing criminal charges after police allege she engaged in a sexual relationship with a student, prompting her arrest and termination from her position at an all-girls private school.

Teddi Page, 29, a former biology teacher at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, was arrested Thursday, Feb. 5, by the New Orleans Police Department and charged with prohibited sexual conduct between an educator and a student, according to WVUE, WWL Louisiana and The Times-Picayune.

Court records cited by the outlets show the charge is a misdemeanor under Louisiana state law.

The investigation began after the 18-year-old student’s mother reported the alleged relationship to school officials, per the outlets.

The Times-Picayune reported that the mother discovered the alleged relationship after going through an old phone that was still logged into her daughter's social media accounts.

In a statement published by the Times-Picayune and WDSU, the Academy of the Sacred Heart said it took the allegation seriously and acted immediately.

“When our school became aware of a recent concern about one of our employees, we took the matter very seriously and immediately followed our safety protocols,” the school said in the statement. “The employee was escorted off campus, and her employment was terminated. We then referred the matter to the New Orleans Police Department.”

The school said all employees are required to undergo background checks and provide references prior to being hired — adding that Page’s background check and references did not raise concerns at the time of her employment.

According to the statement, the school is now supporting the student and her family and providing counseling resources for students affected by the situation.

It's unclear if Page has retained an attorney who can speak on her behalf.
